An Open Letter to the Castle Fandom Prior to Season 8 (AKA I need to rant)

Hey Castle fans!  As we gear up for season 8 I just wanted to stand on my soapbox a little bit and talk about some of the craziness that has happened this summer in the fandom.  Now I will preface this by saying I know this doesn’t apply to the entire fandom and in actuality it is the vast minority of the fandom but it has been driving me absolutely crazy and I just need to vent a little before this season starts. So please hear me out! (Also I apologize for the length of this...I get wordy when ranting)  At the end of last season I was beyond thrilled that Castle got renewed for season 8 and that the contracts of Nathan, Stana, and the rest of the cast got finalized.  Obviously we were upset (myself included) over the departure of PJJ, but as with all shows characters come and go as the story progresses and while we were all sad we handled it respectfully wishing PJJ the best.  What really got to me was all the negativity towards the new season as the summer progressed.
So let’s recap a few things that happened that caused a little fandom drama.  First, we learned that Andrew Marlowe (AWM) and Terri Miller had exited the show and that David Amann (season 7 showrunner) was replaced by Terence Paul Winter (TPW) and Alexi Hawley.   We also learned that there will be new characters this season including one played by actress Toks Olagundoye.  I know that personally I tend to run on the “glass half full” side of issues but I couldn’t believe the negativity that came out of the fandom before we even knew ONE detail about the season 8 storyline.  My twitter feed was full of fans freaking out about AWM and Teri being gone and how the show was sure to fail without them.  Yes, I’m aware that Castle was AWM’s creation but it’s not like the new show runners and writers have no idea what Castle is or any investment in the characters.  TPW has been a writer since 2009 and a producer since 2011 and has written fan favorites like “Cops & Robbers” and “The Blue Butterfly.”  Hawley has also served as a writer/producer on early Castle seasons.  These guys are going to do the show justice and are well aware of what drives the show.  They are going to keep everyone true to character but the show needs to evolve and characters progress: it’s how shows evolve.  I know change can be scary and I’ll be the first to admit that I was nervous about the potential story-lines (particularly Beckett’s next career move) but can you imagine if every episode was the same and we were continually stuck with season 1 developed characters?  For one thing, Castle and Beckett would have never got together.  So yes, there are new show runners and yes MilMar is “gone” but that doesn’t mean the show is diving off into the deep end.
Now what bothered me the most over the hiatus was the amount of negativity some fans displayed towards the addition of new characters.  Early on, we didn’t even know what role these characters were going to play and the fandom was already going crazy speculating that Caskett was breaking up and the show was going to hell.  Then it was revealed that Toks Olagundoye would be playing Hayley, a former Scotland Yard officer, who was involved and Caskett’s world.  This is where things got really crazy and a few fans felt the need to freak out and harass Toks on Twitter because they felt that Caskett was threatened and she wasn’t good for the show.  Well I have a message for all those “fans”:  GROW UP.  It’s ok to not like a character on a TV show but it is NEVER ok to harass a person.  First off, we haven’t even met Toks’ character on the show so I hardly think its ok to judge her already, but harassing a person?  That’s just insane.  I do believe one of the first rules we learned as children was the golden rule or “treat others how you want to be treated.”  Toks is an actress and her job is to bring characters to life not to be insulted by “fans” of the amazing show she is joining. I know I wouldn't want someone harassing me all day while I'm trying to work.  Luckily, Toks has a great sense of humor and she was able to dismiss the haters and brush it off. Also, for every terrible tweet she received there were tons of gracious Castle fans expressing our love and excitement for her involvement in the show. I for one, appreciate how interactive Toks is with the fans and love that she is embracing the Castle fandom. And this doesn't apply just to Toks but everyone involved in Castle.  There is no need to have a war between the fans who only watch Castle for Stana or those who prefer Nathan. Lets focus on our common love and that is Castle and please respect the privacy of the actors! (I'm not even getting into the craziness that ensued after Stana got married...) So again I plead: play nice!
Again, I want to reiterate that I know this IS NOT the majority of the Castle fandom and I honestly love interacting with Castle fans on social media but I needed to get this out of the way before season 8 starts.  I don’t want this to seem like a lecture but more of an eye opener because I am definitely not talking down to the fandom just sharing my observations.  This fandom is full of great people and very talented individuals who create amazing artwork, fanfics, podcasts, blogs, discussions etc driven by a love for Castle and its cast/crew and I love being a part of it and meeting them.  I am always open to different viewpoints and love discussing why people may like or hate a certain character or episode but it has to be done respectfully. So it is my plea to the fandom to enter season 8 with an open mind.  Be receptive to change and be respectful to the cast and crew that works very hard to produce a show that we love and has brought us together.  Once the season starts to air I’m fine with everyone respectfully expressing their opinions on characters and story-lines because we will actually have concrete details.  At that point, I don’t mind if you don’t like Toks’ character or you think the new storylines are terrible because we are all entitled to our own opinion (and that’s what makes social media a great discussion platform!) At least at that point in time we will have watched the episodes and can discuss them with actual examples and evidence (because you always need evidence *wink* )!  So until then all I ask is:
·         Keep an open mind – sometimes the things you think you will hate the most you end up loving
·         Be respectful to actors, crew members and other fans – We are all different and its wonderful! It’s ok to have different opinions but keep it friendly and civil
·         Tune into Season 8 of Castle – Because after all, without the fans there is no Castle!

Xo Always ~DenialLove

You are the joy in my heart. You're the last person I want to see every night when I close my eyes. I love you, Katherine Beckett. And the mystery of you is the one I want to spend the rest of my life exploring. 1. Amen. Thanks for writing this. I feel so thankful we have a Castle Season 8 and wish everyone would sit back, watch, and appreciate this outstanding show!

  2. Thanks for reading! So ready for season 8!

  3. The Sky Is Not Falling (or, My own open letter to the #Castle fandom)

Rick leaving for the Hamptons with Gina instead of Kate did not ruin the show.
Kate dating Josh through season 3 did not ruin the show.
Kate’s lie and Rick’s secret did not ruin the show
Eric Vaughn and the DC arc did not ruin the show.
The Alexis/Pi story arc did not ruin the show.
The season 6 finale and Castle’s banishment from the precinct in season 7 did not ruin the show.

Alexis having a subplot where she helps her dad with his PI business will not destroy Caskett or ruin the show either. I’m not saying our trust should be blind, (mine isn’t either) but would it really kill us to have just a little bit of faith that things will unfold the way they should?

It seems like we cycle through this doom and gloom “the sky is falling” thing every year… And every year the show perseveres, the sky does not fall, Caskett is not ruined and we find something to like and enjoy about the season. Even season 7.

Can we just once not do it this year? Please?

  4. I'm a pragmatist. Always have been. I was just happy Castle was renewed for season eight. I've deliberately stayed spoiler free and away from all forums this year because of the negativity that surrounded season seven. And let's face it, there are some Castle fans that are just downright scary. So this year I plan to sit back and enjoy. I for one am looking forward to changes and new directions

    1. Glad you plan to enjoy and have an open mind to the new season. Should be exciting!

  5. Great summation of what most of us fans agree aboutCastle.

  6. I did the same as Jody. I tried to stay away from spoilers, speculation and even refused to watch a promo. I wanted to have a completely open mind. It helps that I'm not a rabid Caskett fan. I'm a Ryan & Espo fan, so what happens with the Caskett arc doesn't matter to me. lol As long as the boys get decent screen time, I'm good. That said, season 7 was a bit of a disappointment story-wise. The show was getting stale. I'm very glad that we're getting fresh blood as it were, to breath new life into Castle. I won't reveal any spoilers for 8x01, but I will say this season opener was better than the last few premiers and gives me a lot of hope for the show's future. I was sincerely hoping Castle would not jump the shark this season, and so far I don't believe it will. Here's to season eight, gang. I think it's going to be fun. :-)

    1. I enjoyed it as well! Thanks for having an open mind!
